Case 1: Moe's Southwest Grill

Light Commercial Project

December 20, 2009
Binghamton, New York

"Solar makes sense for any business. The government is pushing funding for alternative energy, and what I save on my utility bills multiplies over the next 25+ years. And my customers can feel good about the environmental benefits; they see them as soon as they walk in the door."
Larry W., Owner, Moe's Southwest Grill, Vestal, New York

Background:
Moe's Southwest Grill in Vestal, New York had been in business about two years when they began looking for ways to improve
energy efficiency. Sustainability and financial benefits propelled the company to consider solar energy.

Financial Incentive:
Due to high federal and state government incentives, Moe's original investment was reduced by more than 70%. On a sunny day, the 24-panel system produces about 20 kilowatts of power. The money saved on electricity will eventually be more than double the net cost of installation over the lifetime of the system.

Results:
Moe's 4.2 kW system will save the business approximately $585 annually at 2009 electricity prices and will provide a hedge against escalating energy prices. The system will also displace more than 4,000 pounds of CO2 per year, and generate more than 4,600 kWh of electricity annually.

System Specifications:
System Size: 4.2 kW
Date Completed: December 20, 2009
Installer: Evans Roofing Co.
Mount Structure: Roof mounted kit

Cost Benefits:
Average Electricity Generated: 4687 kWh/year
Savings: $585.88/year*
Lifetime Electricity Savings: $14,647*
*As electric rates go higher, costs savings will increase.

Environmental Benefits are Equivalent to:
CO2 Offset: 4,000 lbs/year
Waste Recycled: 1,500 lbs/year
Trees Preserved: 1 acre (around 750 trees)/year
Gas: 350 gallons/year (= taking 1 car off the road each year)
